Venomous Small-eyed Snake

20th March 2015

Small-eyed Snake (Cryptophis nigrescens) at Jarowair

This dark snake was found at night at Jarowair, and when we both looked at it with the torch, working out what species it was, we both comment at it's small eyes, then the lightning bolt hit that it was a Small-eyed Snake aka Eastern Small-eyed Snake (Cryptophis nigrescens).  This is the first one that we have seen here.

The Small-eyed Snake, while quite quiet, is highly venomous.  It shelters under bark, logs and leaf litter during the day,and has a diet of other small reptiles, their eggs and sometimes frogs.

The photos of this snake didn't turn out very good, but it is at least proof of our recording.

  1. Great sighting! I've never seen this species before but would love to someday... with some respectful distance between it and I! :)

  2. Hello!:) Although I admire their beauty, I am always wary of snakes. Good job for investigating and being able to ID this Small-eyed Snake, I don't think I would have been brave enough to get close to it.
