I recently discovered that one of the Possum Box's that I have made has a Bush-Tailed Possum Occupant. We rarely see possums here, and we wondered if this occupant is the one possum we released after having it in care? It's an unknown, but a welcome inhabitant. B.G.

My last post reported the story of the Scaley-breasted Lorikeets and the Musk Lorikeets, giving the goanna a hard time after it had entered a hollow tree. Since this, we have watched with interest the Lorikeets who keep coming back to the same hollow tree, darting in and out often. It seems that this tree has water pooled in the hollow and the birds are going in and out for a bath. This picture I took this morning shows the top Lorikeet exiting the hollow after having a bath, with very wet feathers. This is obviously another reason why they were most upset about a goanna hiding in their hollow. J.G.

A resident Goanna (Lace Monitor) has decided to come out of hibernation, conveniently after our hens have started to lay eggs again and thus has made his home in a hollow of a tree right on the edge of the chicken yard. To our dismay he has been helping himself to an easy dinner over the last few days, but not without some defence from these Scaley Breasted Lorikeets! The Lorikeets had been making a huge racket and have been rather upset by the goanna hiding in this hollow tree. When I went down to take a photograph of them, I discovered, that amongst the many scaley-breasted lorikeets were about six Musk Lorikeets also! We have had Musk Lorikeets here previously, but have not seen them for quite some time (see previous post). They are very welcome visitors, unlike Mr Goanna to the chook pen! J.G.
